Abstract:Lightweight and highly efficient high-temperature superconducting (HTS) rotating electric machines show great potential for transportation applications. This study involves the design, fabrication, and testing of an HTS induction/synchronous motor with REBCO bulk superconductors for the first time. The prototype features a squirrel-cage rotor wound with 44 REBCO bulk bars embedded in the rotor iron and connected at both ends by REBCO tapes to form a short circuit. The critical current of the bulk sample was investigated by subjecting it to a maximum magnetic field of 5 T perpendicular to its top surface at 77 K. Then, no-load and load tests were carried out in liquid nitrogen, utilizing various frequencies to verify the prototype’s performance. The results of these tests indicate that the prototype has the potential to be used in future transportation applications due to its compact size and high reliability.
