Abstract:The magnetocaloric effect (MCE) is the phenomenon of a temperature changing of a magnetic material when an external magnetic field changes, acting on it under adiabatic conditions. This effect is most pronounced at temperatures close to the temperature of the magnetic phase transition (Curie temperature).

At present, MCE is widely used to achieve low temperatures and is the main phenomenon that underlies the operation of a magnetic refrigerator. For magnetic refrigerator, it is very important that the magnetic material has a small thermal expansion and magnetostriction, and a large MCE.

Some of the promising materials, which can be using in magnetic refrigeration is RT2 (R: Gd, Er, Ho, Dy; T: Al, Co,Ni) Laves intermetallic compounds.

This paper presents the results of magnetocaloric effect, thermal expansion and transport properties of poly-crystalline Laves compounds.
