Abstract:One technology being investigated to reduce the emissions of future commercial aircraft is electrified propulsion systems, in which kinetic energy from gas turbine engines is transmitted electrically to propulsor fans rather than via mechanical shafts as in modern turbofan engines. As the goal is an increase in efficiency, it is important that every component in an electrified propulsion system be as lightweight and have as low losses as possible. High-precision finite element analysis of these components is typically performed on the components individually rather than optimizing multiple interdependent components together, which may result in non-optimal configurations. In this study, the effects of considering rectification electronics in the optimization of fully superconducting generators for electrified aircraft propulsion systems will be discussed.
