AC loss measurement in stacks of HTS coil assemblies coupled with an iron core

Abstract:Utilizing high temperature superconducting (HTS) magnets in Rapid cycling synchrotrons (RCSs) has great potential for further reduction of construction and running costs of the magnets. However, AC loss could be a critical obstacle for the application. Since RCS magnets are coupled with an iron core for efficient magnetic field generation, prediction and reduction of AC loss of HTS coil coupled with iron core are essential for developing practical HTS RCS magnets.
In this work, we reported AC loss measurements on two and seven stacks of HTS double pancake coils (DPCs) coupled with an iron core. Note that we adapted the experimental approach to determine the AC loss in the iron core, and we also conducted the measurements on DPCs without iron core for the comparison.
