Abstract:Application of a high-performance thermal insulation is one of the key conditions for constriction a long-distance superconducting power transmission line. Multilayer insulation exhibits the best characteristics, but the performance depends on the degree of vacuum. The presence of sufficiently dense packages of the reflective films and a large cryopipe length are significantly impair the pumping conditions. We have estimated the maximum length of the cryogenic pipe achievable by using one vacuum pump, based on data obtained in the Ishikari project. A case of thermal insulation with a radiation screen is also discussed.
