Abstract:AC loss reduction of superconducting power transmission cables is of great importance to promote their application in power grids. To meet certain installation conditions, some cables are required to be designed with fixed diameters. This paper focuses on diameter fixed monolayer and multilayer (2-layer and 4-layer) superconducting power transmission cables constructed with coated conductors. Detailed numerical analyses of their AC loss reduction by replacing generally used 4-mm wide coated conductors with 2-mm wide narrow ones are presented. Trapezoidal lateral critical current density (Jc) distributions with shoulders as well as uniform ones were assumed in coated conductors for the analyses. It is obtained and testified that narrow coated conductors can effectively reduce the AC loss, even though more gaps are induced. The knowledge presented is helpful for designing and fabricating practical cables.
