Abstract:This paper presents a detailed numerical analysis of the influence of damaged coated conductors to AC losses of mono-layer and multi-layer superconducting power transmission cables. It is obtained that damaged coated conductors significantly increase the AC losses of mono-layer cables, whereas slightly influencing the AC losses of cables with many layers, such as 4-layer and 6-layer cables. First, the comparison of AC losses of mono-layer/multi-layer cables with and without damaged coated conductors is presented. Second, the AC loss distributions among layers and the magnetic flux density distributions in specific coated conductors are shown. Finally, the influence of damaged coated conductors is discussed.
