Abstract:REBCO coated conductors are available on longer and longer length from industrial manufacturers. While the excellent mechanical properties are limiting the coil current for large coils (diameter > 100 mm) in smaller coils (diameter < 100 mm) the perpendicular components of magnetic field is limiting the coil current. Coils of various sizes (from 18 to 300 mm diameters) have been fabricated by layer winding. In the 18 mm diameter coil the coil current could reach 350 A, generating 1.8 T, while in the 300 mm diameter coil the mechanical stress reached 500 MPa at 200 A, without degradation of the superconducting properties. A varnish insulation has been tested, in order to replace the thick Kapton film insulation provided by the tape manufacturer.
