Design of magnets employing coated conductor tapes

Abstract:REBCO coated conductors are available on longer and longer length from industrial manufacturers. The anisotropic properties and the mechanical properties have been measured， and the influence on the magnet design is discussed. After introducing the definition of mechanical critical current density， a new design strategy based on the comparison between mechanical and superconducting properties is presented. Notwithstanding the strong anisotropy， the current in a coil built with coated conductors is mainly limited by the mechanical properties. The design of a 1 GHz NMR magnet is presented to illustrate the advantages of coated conductors with respect to classical LTS wires in the construction of high field solenoids.
